On October 10^th, 2023 (World Mental Health Day), I will be removing my mask (beard) as I face off against PTSD.

Statistics show that 1 first responder suicides every 4 weeks and in veterans that number jumps to 1 every 2 weeks. Through the training and provision of assistance dogs, PTSD Dogs Australia’s aim is to reduce these figures. Veterans Affairs paper here.

These dogs are not cheap however, with initial training taking over 300 hours and further training once the dog has been paired with their handler the cost is over $40,000 for each dog.

These dogs make an enormous difference in the lives of veterans and first responders who are affected by PTSD, they can even go as far as saving their recipients life.

One of our recent recipients had this to say about his dog;

“You came into my life full of energy, your my mate, my friend now my guardian. In the short time we’ve know each other you’ve made my life enjoyable. I can eat out with my partner, navigate the shops, and live a normal life that so many others have. You got my six. Tears well as I write about you because I don’t think you’ll ever know just how much you have impacted my life. The joy, the security the constant eye over me.”
